Meet our team! All the work that Churamura does wouldn’t be possible without a dedicated team!

Dr. Mareike Dornhege is our Director of Operations and makes sure that we use up-to-date scientific knowledge and protocols when we are out working with turtles in the field.

Rescue and relocation are a big part of our mission at Churamura, but collecting scientific data to share with the global turtle community is an important long-term goal that ensures turtles can be protected better everywhere, not just in Okinawa.

Mareike’s background is in fisheries and shark ecology, and she has published her research in both Nature and Science, the two biggest academic journals. She has also hosted a Discovery Channel Shark Week episode on Japanese deep sea sharks and world with shark fishermen on bycatch mitigation before applying what she learnt to helping sea turtles as well.

When she’s not out in the field or presenting our work at an academic conference, you can also catch one of her talks here in Okinawa to learn more about sharks and turtles.”

保護と移転は私たちチュラムラの使命の大きな部分を占めていますが、世界のウミガメ・コミュニティと共有するための科学的データの収集は、沖縄だけでなくあらゆる場所でウミガメをよりよく保護できるようにするための重要な長期目標です。

マレイケの専門は漁業とサメの生態学であり、2大学術誌である『ネイチャー』と『サイエンス』に研究論文を発表している。彼女はまた、ディスカバリー・チャンネルのシャーク・ウィークで日本の深海ザメに関するエピソードの司会を務めたり、サメ漁師と混獲の緩和について議論したりした後、学んだことをウミガメの支援にも応用している。

彼女がフィールドに出かけていないときや、学会で私たちの研究を発表していないときは、ここ沖縄で彼女の講演を聴き、サメとウミガメについてもっと知ることができる。

Spring break camp opportunity! The future of cons

Spring break camp opportunity! The future of conservation begins with the next generation and inspiring children is a big part of our mission! Churamura’s Sea Turtle Conservation Junior Rangers programs has inspired countless kids for over three seasons and is an exciting way for kids to learn first-hand how we protect Okinawa’s endangered sea turtles and marine life. The Little Loggerhead Junior Ranger Camp will be an adventure full of ocean exploration, sea turtle conservation, “hands-on feet-wet” education focusing on marine science with a splash of Okinawan culture. クバサキ高校の 3 年生、サクラロペスさんは、夏に私たちと一緒に巣の保護活動を手伝いながら、元チームメンバーの指導の下でデータ収集と研究に取り組んでいました。最近、彼女はジュニアサイエンス & ヒューマニティーズシンポジウムで研究結果を発表し、2 位を獲得した際に私たちは授賞式に招待されました 🥈🤩
彼女の賞品には、奨学金と、今年後半に開催される全国会議で発表するためのワシントンへの旅行が含まれていました! 私たちはこれ以上ないほど誇りに思っています 😍 サクラ、よくやった!!
Ms. Sakura Lopez, a senior at Kubasaki HS spent the summer with us assisting with our nest conservation activities while collecting data and undertaking research under the guidance of our former team member. Recently she presented her findings at the Junior Science & Humanities Symposium and we were invited to attend the awards ceremony when she won 2nd place 🥈🤩
Her prize included a scholarship and trip to Washington to present in the National conference later this year! We couldn’t be prouder 😍 Well done Sakura!!

If you see a turtle that has washed ashore, please call our 24-hour hotline at 080-5537-9991.
After receiving the report, Churamura will dispatch it's Sea Turtle Stranding Team.

We ask that you don’t touch or disturb the turtle. Thank you for helping us support Okinawa's sea turtles!

Last month, four of our directors flew up to Miyaz

Last month, four of our directors flew up to Miyazaki for the annual Japanese National Sea Turtle Conference hosted by the Japan Sea Turtle Association. We were so honored to be recognized in our efforts and asked to make a few presentations on our conservation activities. Dr Mareike spoke about some of the surprises we had during nesting season in 2024, namely The 90+ day incubation of a green turtle nest and also some irregular predation events we had in nests as well.

It was a wonderful opportunity to network with other top leaders in sea turtle research and conservation in Japan as well as so much needed team bonding for our leaders.

We can’t thank our supporters enough who allowed us to use some of the funds to travel to the mainland and experience such a valuable opportunity!

先月、日本ウミガメ協議会主催の全国ウミガメ会議が宮崎で開催され、私たち4人の理事が出席しました。私たちの活動が認められ、保護活動に関するいくつかのプレゼンテーションを依頼され、とても光栄に思いました。マーラ博士は、2024年の営巣シーズンに私たちが経験した驚きの出来事、すなわち90日以上にわたるアオウミガメの巣の孵化や、巣で起こった不規則な捕食について話しました。

日本のウミガメ研究と保護における他のトップリーダーたちとネットワークを作る素晴らしい機会であり、私たちのリーダーたちにとって必要なチームの絆を深める機会でもありました。

The future of conservation begins with the next generation and inspiring children is a big part of our mission! Churamura’s Sea Turtle Conservation Junior Rangers programs has inspired countless kids for well over three seasons and is an exciting way for kids to learn first-hand how we protect Okinawa’s endangered sea turtles and marine life.
The Little Loggerhead Junior Ranger Camp will be an adventure full of ocean exploration, sea turtle conservation, “hands-on feet-wet” education focusing on marine science with a splash of Okinawan culture.
