Churamura’s Nest Techs excavate every sea turtle nest to collect data. This takes place 5 nights after the first baby sea turtle emerged from the nest.

Our goal is to remove all the contents of the nest and sort them into 10 different categories. We can find live hatchlings, empty eggshells, unhatched eggs, and sometimes even dead hatchlings 🐢

After we categorize the nest contents, one calculation we make is the Hatching Success Rate. This is the ratio of eggs that hatched to the number of eggs laid.

If you find sea turtle tracks on the beach this summer, report it to our Sea Turtle Hotline at 080-5537-9991 ‼️

**Our team of Nest Techs are permitted through the Okinawa Prefectural Government to handle eggs and hatchlings for data collection**

We often find live hatchlings in the nest during an excavation. By excavating at night, we ensure any stragglers get to make their journey to the ocean in the dark as they naturally would! 🐢

Sea turtles are considered stranded when they are found dead, injured, or show any sign of health issues or irregular behavior on land or in water. Most of the stranding reports we receive are dead sea turtles that have washed up on the beach.

The Stranding Response Team responded to 2 stranding reports in July. The majority of strandings the Stranding Response Team responds to are reported by the public.

Sea turtle strandings can happen anywhere, anytime. ‼️ Please call our HOTLINE 📞 at (080) 5537-9991 if you find a dead or alive sea turtle.

ウミガメは、陸上や水中で死んでいたり、怪我をしていたり、健康上の問題や異常な行動の兆候が見られる場合、ストランディングしているとみなされます。私たちが受けるストランディング報告のほとんどは、海岸に打ち上げられたウミガメの死骸です。

沖縄中部運ガメ産卵モニタリングプログラムチームは大忙しです！ボランティアたちは太陽とともに起きて、🌤 島中の海岸をパトロールし、ウミガメの足跡を探します。🐢

7月中、69キロ 💪. をパトロールしました。チュラムラが沖縄のウミガメの生息数を支援するために早朝から熱心に働いてくださったボランティアの皆様に感謝します。💙

ここ沖縄では、ウミガメの産卵期は通常4月から10月です。営巣期には、性的に成熟したメスのウミガメは、巣を作るために生まれた場所に戻ります。メスのウミガメは海から現れ、営巣に適していると判断した場所まで体を浜辺に引きずり上げ、産卵します。その後、卵を産み、体を引きずりながら砂浜を下って水中に戻ります。営巣中にウミガメが作る痕跡、つまり足跡は「クロール」と呼ばれます。すべてのクロールが実際に営巣につながるわけではなく、カメが浜に上がって産卵せずに海に戻る場合もあります。これは「偽クロール」と呼ばれます。沖縄中部巣監視ボランティアは、監視対象のエリア内のすべての巣とクロールのデータを追跡しています。

The Central Okinawa Nest Monitoring Program team has been busy! Volunteers rise with the sun 🌤 to patrol Oki beaches across the island to look for signs of turtle nests 🐢

During the month of July, we patrolled over 69 km 💪 Thank you to our volunteers for their early mornings and hard work to help Churamura support the sea turtle population in Okinawa 💙

Here in Okinawa, sea turtle 🐢 nesting season is typically from April to October. During nesting season, sexually mature female sea turtles will return to the general area they were born to nest. The markings, or tracks made by the sea turtle during a nesting event, are referred to as a “crawl”. Not every crawl actually leads to nesting, there are times when the turtle will come up the beach and go back to the ocean without laying eggs, this is referred to as a “false crawl” or a non-nesting crawl. The Central Okinawa Nest Monitoring volunteers track data on all crawls and nests within the monitored island.
